STUART THORN FCSD was born in Cornwall and, apart from student days in London, has lived all his life on the county’s north coast. He studied Fine Art at Redruth and Falmouth Schools of Art in the early 1960s during a period of great international significance, with lectures from artists from the St Ives School including sculptor Denis Mitchell and painter Terry Frost. Although he went on to become a successful international graphic designer, their influence and inspiration still fuel a life-long love of painting.
Stuart explores the distinctive nature of the Cornish landscape and seascapes, from the large open expanses of the Clay Country to the protective enclosures of the Cornish harbour. Stuart interprets the elements, and absorbs these personally felt impressions. His paintings are then executed in the studio from memory and brief on-the-spot notes. They then emerge and evolve; without looking to record accurate detail he captures an essential character, the rhythm and the formal relationship of both landscape and seascape. www.stuartthornpaintings.co.uk |
