RICHARD SUNDERLAND studied in Leeds and Bradford before moving to Devon in 1969 to take his Dip AD in Fine Art at Exeter College of Art and PGCE at Exeter University. He then followed a career in art teaching for over 40 years.
He paints in any medium and explores printmaking techniques. He looks at the urban and rural environment while trying to discover the history and spirit of a place through thoughts and ideas that he connects with the local environment. His mixed media watercolours are like stains on walls, the recording of the evolving effects of time on the landscape. Scratching and staining through paper, board or canvas he discovers qualities that connect to the fabric of a place, the relationship the location has to it's surroundings, whether natural or unnatural, pure or cracked, ancient or modern. www.richardsunderlandart.com |
