MICHAEL CARTER was born in London and studied at Hatfield Polytechnic and the University of Oxford. He is a graduate in the Humanities and English and a member of the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts.
In his landscape photography he avoids idealized images of environmental states and instead seeks to capture evocations of the uncanny and prospects of enchantment. An abiding theme is the notion of the corrupted pastoral, which shows artificial forms colliding and integrating with the natural. Increasingly the structures of these kinds of landscapes have intensified his interest in the formal aspects of the visual field, provoking a retreat from the distant prospect to things within reach. Recent exhibitions show work in which the abstract features of objects are scrutinized. His biographical commentaries and portraits of artists can be found in South West Academy: Art, People, Places (2014), and The Penwith Society of Arts: Portraits of the Artists (2018). |
