MARY GILLETT specialises in etching: a medium that has been developed for its own intrinsic qualities and is frequently used to produce single images as individual as paintings. Her starting points are often found on Dartmoor and the Cornish coastline.
The etchings are scored, furrowed, scraped and burnished until the history of their making symbolises the landscape that confronts her. The combination of light and dark and a tactile immediacy creates images of intense atmosphere. She applies etching principles to the medium of collograph so as to work more freely on a larger scale. Her oil paintings are informed by her printmaking but are often lighter in mood. After a foundation course at Plymouth Art College, she completed a fine art degree at UWE, followed by a PGCE and a postgraduate diploma in printmaking at Brighton University. Mary founded Tamar Print Workshop in 1992. www.marygillett.co.uk |
