ADELA POWELL’s ceramic work has a strong sculptural quality conceived by various hand building techniques in conjunction with alteration of thrown and pressed forms.
Pieces undergo extensive textural processes with layering of multiple slips, including unrefined river and coastal muds, along with found objects in the mineral rich landscape of the Tamar Valley or from the coast. Multiple glazes and firings further add to the development of rich surfaces. Powell’s artistic practice is uniquely idiosyncratic, drawing on ideas of juxtaposition between natural constructs, decay and human expressions in the form of graffiti and symbolic and gestural mark making. All of this is expertly choreographed to create infinite possibilities of surface and form, often ignoring conventions regarding scale and technique in favour of adventurous and distinctive creation. www.adelapowell.co.uk |
