ADELA POWELL He has always worked within an abstract tradition. Being at art college in the mid-1960s abstraction was strong. It was always based on an intimate understanding of materials and techniques, an internal response in colour, shape and texture to a specific element in the landscape or human form.
Williams has without exception based all his work on a knowledge of drawing and recording: the bedrock of his abstraction. Abstract images have always felt more real and personal to Williams than figurative work. He has a deeper emotional attachment to them. I always feel surprised with what I do, embracing the unexpected within the work seems right for me. I remind myself that I work within a tradition which is well over one hundred years old. Each time I begin I feel excited that it is possible to produce a new and unique image. Work held in private and public collections. |
