Debby Mason Marine life is a constant fascination and inspiration for her. This might be found in books such as Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, with its vivid descriptions of strange sea creatures and their evocative and truly exotic names; species like Sea Dragons, Nautilus, Argonaut and Fangtooth and the curious history of the Coelacanth, the 'Fossil Fish’.
Etching is the perfect medium for the fine detail of many of the fish that she draws, while the mezzotint, with its soft velvety finish and the idea of bringing light out of the dark, is perfectly suited to her series of ‘Twilight Zone’ fish, emerging out of intense inky depths. Her work has featured in three Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions and she has had solo shows at The National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth; London Zoo; Aquarium Finisterrae, La Coruna, Spain; and L'Oceanografic, Valencia, Spain. www.debbymason.com |
